Executive Order 33: Phone Free Schools

On July 9, 2024, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin signed Executive Order 33 calling for restrictions on cell phone use during instructional time in public schools. The order is a response to increasing evidence that cell phone and social media use has severe negative impacts on students' educational success and mental wellbeing. Virginia school divisions are required to comply with the order by January 1, 2025.

Implementation of YONDR pouches in Middle & High Schools

The CCPS Yondr Program will utilize a simple, secure pouch that stores cell phones and other electronic devices. Every student will secure their phone and other devices in a personally assigned Yondr pouch when they arrive at school. Students will maintain possession of their phones and will not use them until their pouches are opened at the end of the school day. Students are required to bring their Yondr pouch to and from school each day and are responsible for their pouch at all times.

How Yondr Works:

Three-step visual guide to using the Yondr pouch. The first image shows a phone being placed into the assigned Yondr pouch as students enter school. The second image demonstrates closing and securing the pouch, which students keep with them throughout the day. The third image illustrates students tapping their pouch on a base when leaving school to unlock and retrieve their phone."
